Giant pearls: hidden treasures of the oceans
Pearls have always fascinated with their luster and rarity. While fine and cultured pearls are prized in jewelry, some defy imagination with their exceptional size. True masterpieces of nature, these colossal pearls are generating growing interest among collectors and gemology experts. Among them, two extraordinary specimens stand out: the Puerto Pearl and the Giga Pearl, each possessing a fascinating history and inestimable value.
The Puerto Pearl: a marvel hidden for 10 years
In 2006, a Filipino fisherman diving off the island of Palawan made an unexpected discovery inside a giant clam: a gigantic pearl. Not realizing the value of his treasure, he kept it under his bed for ten years, convinced it brought good luck. It was not until 2016, following a fire that forced the family to evacuate the house, that the pearl was rediscovered and entrusted to local authorities.
Measuring an impressive 67 cm long by 30 cm wide and weighing 34 kg, the Puerto Pearl is now the largest known pearl in the world. Although its exact price remains confidential, its estimated value reaches several million dollars. Its natural origin and incredible dimensions make it a unique treasure in the history of jewelry.
The Giga Pearl: a legendary pearl exhibited in Canada
Another exceptional jewel, the Giga Pearl is the largest natural pearl ever certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Weighing 27.65 kg (138,254 carats), it is featured in the Guinness Book of World Records and intrigues as much by its rarity as by its pearly luster and baroque shape.
Its owner, a passionate collector, has decided to offer the public a unique opportunity to admire it. For the past few weeks, the Giga Pearl has been exhibited in Canada, as part of the « Beneath The Surface » event at Avante Garde in Toronto. The exhibition runs until March 18, an exceptional opportunity for gemology enthusiasts to approach this priceless treasure. Its value exceeds 150 million Australian dollars, confirming its status as one of the most precious pearls in the world.
The formation of giant pearls: an extremely rare phenomenon
Unlike traditional pearls from pearl oysters, these pearly titans are produced by giant clams (Tridacna gigas). These bivalve mollusks, which can exceed one meter in width, secrete nacre around a foreign body trapped in their shell. This process can last for decades, or even centuries, which explains the extreme rarity of these giant pearls.

Collectible and speculative objects
Giant pearls do not merely amaze; they also generate strong enthusiasm in the market of collectors and investors. Unlike diamonds or rubies, whose value is dictated by precise criteria such as purity or color, these pearls owe their price to their size, history, and provenance. The Puerto Pearl and the Giga Pearl are now considered museum pieces, fueling the covetousness of rare gemstone enthusiasts.
Exhibitions and enthusiasm surrounding pearls
If these treasures of nature often find refuge in private collections, they are also highlighted in prestigious exhibitions. In Paris, l'École des Arts Joailliers is preparing a retrospective entitled « Paris, Capital of the Pearl », scheduled from November 21, 2024, to June 1, 2025. This exhibition will retrace the fascinating history of the pearl through exceptional pieces from the greatest jewelry houses.
Preservation of giant clams: a challenge for the future
While these pearls are natural wonders, their existence relies on the preservation of giant clams, currently threatened by overfishing and habitat destruction. These mollusks, essential to the formation of such pearls, are becoming increasingly scarce, which could make these treasures even more precious in the future.
Giant pearls are much more than mere gemstones. They bear witness to an exceptional and continuous natural process and continue to nourish the dreams of collectors and high jewelry enthusiasts. Rare, unique, and priceless, they remind us that the oceans still hold unexplored secrets.
