“Behind every jewel lies a story of transmission, modesty, or audacity… sometimes all three at once.”
The expression “family jewels” has become a familiar way to refer to a part of the male anatomy, in this case the testicles. As you might expect, this expression is not new! Indeed, it has been used for ages. But what is its true origin?
A matter of bandits
The following explanation is undoubtedly the one that best illustrates the transformation of a joke into a familiar expression that has spanned the centuries. You are certainly aware that insecurity and theft are not phenomena unique to our era. We can even say that we live in a relatively safer environment than before. In fact, insecurity is as old as humanity. In the Middle Ages, people had to face numerous dangers. Especially during their travels, those who left their usual living environment exposed themselves to the risks of an uncertain world. It is therefore not surprising that the customs of the time included a long prayer before setting out on a journey, in order to ask for the protection of God and the saints. On the other hand, the medical techniques of the period rarely offered good prospects in the event of an accident on the road or if the traveler contracted an illness along the way. In addition to illnesses, ambushes and thefts were among the worst scourges of the Middle Ages. Bandits particularly targeted carriages transporting wealthy individuals. The latter were accustomed to keeping their most precious jewels close to them. These jewels, often inherited, were a symbol of distinction and wealth that owners had to watch over constantly.
To avoid being robbed en route, the jewels were therefore cleverly hidden. And lacking a safe place to store them, men had the idea of concealing them in their undergarments. Thus, the expression “family jewels” was supposedly born. Of course, this did not discourage bandits, who then made a habit of asking their victims to uncover the lower part of their body to check if anything was hidden there.

A matter of lineage
Another hypothesis suggests another possible origin for the expression “family jewels”. It rests on the importance given to a man's lineage to transmit his genes and his name, thus ensuring the perpetuity of his family line. From this perspective, family and descendants were considered the greatest treasure a man could possess. The male genital area, particularly the scrotum, therefore represented the most precious jewel for him, the guarantor of his lineage.
A treasure to preserve
It is amusing to note that, despite the humorous connotation that the expression “family jewels” has acquired over time, it nonetheless highlights a universal truth: the importance of preserving what one considers precious. Men, just like their ancestors, have always been attentive to the protection of their “jewels”

Although the term may bring a smile, it is a lighthearted reminder that, fundamentally, the notion of wealth has not changed all that much. Even today, everyone jealously guards their own treasures, whether they be material or symbolic. Perhaps that lies all the charm of this expression, halfway between the seriousness of family heritage and the humor of a risqué wink.
