There are designers who follow fashion, and others who keep it standing. Azzedine Alaïa belonged to the latter category. Until January 4, 2027, the foundation bearing his name in the Marais district is dedicating an exhibition to a recurring thread that ran through his entire oeuvre without ever making the front page: Africa. Around fifty designs, almost all of them brought together for the first time around this theme.

A Couturier Whom the Continent Never Left

Alaïa was born in Tunis. He left for Paris at a young age, building a career there that would make him one of the most admired couturiers of his generation—the one whom models called "Papa" and whose body-hugging dresses redefined the silhouette of the 1980s. But Tunisia, and Africa more broadly, never let go of him. It resurfaced everywhere in his work, discreetly, like a memory that refuses to fade.

The exhibition, curated by Olivier Saillard, traces the source of this fascination through three collections in particular: Spring-Summer 1988, 1989, and 1990. It was here that Alaïa pushed his dialogue with the continent the furthest, moving away from his usual sculptural blacks in favor of hues that look as though they were gathered straight from the earth: twine, putty, sand, soil.

What to Expect

The couturier worked with materials like an artisan. Here, he crafts dresses from seashells and woven raffia. Openwork shirts whose cutouts evoke the moucharabiehs of his native Tunisia. Cottons in a chalky white reminiscent of the walls of houses in the Maghreb. And, as a nod to Egypt, bandage-style dresses with an almost solemn presence.

On the first floor, another perspective on Africa unfolds: photographs by Peter Beard, a friend of the couturier, recalling a shared journey to Maasai country in 1996. It becomes clear that, for Alaïa, African inspiration was not a decorative motif plastered onto a garment, but a way of seeing.

Why It Is Worth the Visit

Alaïa's silhouette and glamour have been showcased extensively. This exhibition takes the opposite approach: it tells the story of where his vocabulary came from, and which colors and textures nourished his eye. For anyone interested in fashion as a heritage rather than a fleeting trend, this is a rare appointment. And the venue—the couturier's own foundation in the Marais—adds to the intimacy of the visit.
