From November 21, 2024, to June 1, 2025, L’École des Arts Joailliers presents an exceptional exhibition entitled “Paris, Capital of the Pearl”. This event highlights the rich and lesser-known history of the pearl in Paris, its central role in commerce and the luxury industry, as well as its influence on Parisian culture. Through around a hundred rare and precious pieces, visitors are invited to discover the fascination of jewelers and artists for this natural treasure from the late 19th century to the present day.

The Pearl: A Jewel at the Heart of Parisian History

Sought after since antiquity, the pearl has always been synonymous with luxury and elegance. However, few know the importance it held in trade between the Arabian-Persian Gulf and France between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century. During this period, Paris became a hub for the pearl trade, fueling the luxury industry and influencing Parisian culture. The exhibition “Paris, Capital of the Pearl” recounts this artistic, commercial, and human adventure, unveiling pieces of rare beauty.

A Prestigious Collection of Exceptional Pieces

The exhibition features around a hundred pieces from twenty prestigious lenders, such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Petit Palais, as well as the collections of the Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, and Fred houses. Among the treasures on display are necklaces, brooches, and other jewelry adorned with natural pearls, illustrating the craftsmanship and creativity of Parisian jewelers. These pieces bear witness to the craze for the pearl and its central role in the Parisian luxury industry.

The Influence of the Pearl on Parisian Arts and Culture

Beyond jewelry, the pearl has inspired many Parisian artists. From painters to photographers, and fashion designers alike, all have been captivated by the luster and symbolism of the pearl. The exhibition highlights this “pearl mania” through various works, reflecting the impact of the pearl on Parisian culture. For example, illustrations by George Barbier and advertisements by Jean Gabriel Domergue show how the pearl was integrated into the aesthetics of the era.

The Gemmological Origins of the Pearl

The exhibition begins with a gemmological introduction to the origins of the pearl. This fascinating biomineral forms inside certain mollusks as a result of a natural reaction to irritation. Fine pearls, also known as natural pearls, are particularly rare and prized for their unique beauty. This educational section allows visitors to better understand the formation of pearls and their classification, thereby enriching their appreciation of the exhibited pieces.

The Evolution of the Pearl Trade in Paris

Between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century, Paris became a nerve center for the pearl trade. Trade routes connecting the Arabian-Persian Gulf to the French capital enabled the growth of a flourishing market. Parisian jewelry houses were thus able to access pearls of exceptional quality, which they integrated into their creations. This period also saw the emergence of emblematic figures in the pearl trade, contributing to the city's economic boom and reinforcing its status as a capital of luxury.

The Cultured Pearl: A Revolution in Jewelry

The arrival of the cultured pearl in France in the 1920s marked a turning point in the jewelry industry. Thanks to the innovations of Kokichi Mikimoto, cultured pearl production developed, making this jewel more accessible. Parisian houses, although initially reluctant, quickly adopted these pearls to create iconic pieces. The exhibition “Paris, Capital of the Pearl” illustrates this transition with period jewelry, highlighting the transformation of the market and the new opportunities offered by the cultured pearl.

An Immersive and Educational Journey

L’École des Arts Joailliers does not merely exhibit exceptional pieces: it offers a true immersion into the world of pearls. Through interactive displays, archival documents, and explanatory videos, visitors discover selection methods, artisans' work, and the evolution of jewelry styles. This educational aspect enhances the exhibition's appeal, attracting gemmology enthusiasts and luxury history buffs alike.

A Unique Opportunity to Admire Priceless Treasures

The exhibition “Paris, Capital of the Pearl” is a rare opportunity to contemplate iconic jewels that have shaped the history of French luxury. Between historical pieces and modern creations, it traces the fascinating journey of the pearl through the ages. A major event for all lovers of high jewelry and Parisian jewelry heritage.
